Immediately after the courtesy visit to the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bashir Makama psc+ led the visiting team to the Area Command Headquarters for the July 2019 edition of the State General Meeting cum Community Interactive Session which for a long time to come will be remembered for the many achievements it recorded in one day. After the usual Police welcome drills, inspection of sentry lguards and exchange of pleasantries with PCRC leaders and other sister security agencies on ground, the programme commenced with opening prayers said by Rev. O. O. Odunewu and Chief Imam, Alhaji Tajudeen Adewunmi, then the rendition of the National Anthem followed by that of the State, Ise Ya.
The pupils of Oronna High School, llaro were invited to entertain the gathering with a cultural display much to the delight and admiration of everyone present. Thereafter, the Area Command Chairman, Chief S. J. Popoola was invited to give his welcome address.
In his short but fascinating and endearing speech, he appreciated the dignitaries present at the meeting and intelligently seized the opportunity to put the needs of Area Command before the CP which according to him include "the APC tank assigned to Ilaro to be returned, the reopening of the Police Post at Idogo, shortage of man-power at the Divisions, construction of Police Post at several towns within the Area Command to complement policing efforts amongst others". Shortly after, the Area Commander also gave his welcome address. ACP Christopher Adeyeri, very skillfully built on the speech of the Area Command Chairman but with a good focus on the areas of need as identified by the previous speaker.
Thereafter, the State Chairman, Pastor (Dr) M. A. Lawson took over the floor to make a short but precise speech and in his usual eloquent remarks, he emphasized on the need for improved vigilance and security in all the nooks and crannies of the State urging all PCRC members not to rest on our oars but relentlessly assist the Police in sustaining the atmosphere of peace which the State is known for while ensuring that our communities are crime free. He subsequently invited the National Vice Chairman Southwest, Alhaji Mogaji Ibrahim Olaniyan to give his goodwill message.
In his well coordinated and articulated manner, the NVC also encouraged the people of Yewaland to always support the Police where and whenever possible because by doing so, we are ultimately helping ourselves. He pointed out that many of the Officers using the CP as example, are not indigenes of Ogun State but they have left their all to focus on the very important business of securing the State as a constitutional duty. He therefore prayed for Almighty Allah's blessings, protection and wisdom for success for them in doing the job as expected. Once done, it was time for the Commissioner of Police to make his presentation.
As usual, the number one Security Officer in Ogun State Police Command did not disappoint with his reassuring words that Ogun State under his watch must be crime-free. He convincingly built the confidence of all the Security Stakeholders at the meeting by assuring them of his readiness to rid the State off perpetrators of crime and criminality, which is one of the reasons he is collaborating with the PCRC so that in every part of the State, he is sure of having the people watch over the people and give the Police credible information to assist them perform better.
He informed the gathering that activities have been lined up to assess his 100days in office as a way of reviewing the performances, achievements and challenges of the Command since his assumption of office. He further appreciated the synergy that exists between the Police and other sister security agencies while calling for better collaboration and understanding among the security agencies. To the community leaders, the CP enjoined them to ensure that the people in the communities are periodically orientated on the need for peaceful coexistence with people of other tribes.
We all must live together, work together and give the synergy a chance to work. He particularly spoke in local dialect to the Hausa/Fulani community to live and work peacefully with local dwellers, they should comport themselves decently at work, properly direct their cattles and most importantly, the cattle rearers must respect the rights of farmers, conduct their business well and report criminal elements who might want to infiltrate them to wreck havoc to the Police.
After his pleasant oratory on security, the CP invited the National Vice Chairman Southwest and the State Chairman with other Executive members to join him as he launches the latest outfit, Police Community Safety Corps, a two-wing Security Unit namely Police Community Safety Ambassadors and Police Community Safety Officers. These outfits will work closely with the Nigeria Police to assist in several ways but notably in Traffic Control, Crowd Control, Crime Prevention, Security Surveillance & Watch, Prevention of Jungle Justice etc. He showcased the prototype of the Safety Vests to be worn by the Community Safety Ambassadors. The modalities of operations for these outfits will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
The CP equally presented the Information Boxes designed for the collation of credible, factual and helpful suggestions and information that will be passed to his office and he promised to handle the information with confidentiality required. Each box will be placed at strategic locations within the communities for easy access and usage by the people. So he encouraged all the people to take advantage of this initiative for improved Police performance throughout the State.
He also inaugurated two new PCRC units for higher institutions within llaro namely the Federal Polytechnic PCRC Unit and Ogun State School of Nursing PCRC Unit to the applause of everyone present.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bashir Makama psc+ later joined by other dignitaries went to lay the foundation for the construction of the Area Commander's Quarters, a laudable project undertaken by the PCRC.
"Indeed, it was an epoch making event and we appreciate all those who worked tirelessly for the success of the day's events" the State PRO, Prince Obinuga added.
