The long arm of the law has caught up with a member of a notorious and deadly armed robbery syndicate terrorising motorists on the popular long bridge, near Berger on the ever busy Lagos/ Ibadan Expressway.
The bandits, whose modus operandi was to position themselves under the bridge, only to strike at the slightest breakdown of a vehicle within the axis, got more than they bargained for when their operation was botched by policemen on patrol, who succeeded in the arrest of one Lucky Emmanuel.
TMnews gathered that the hoodlums had, on Christmas day, taken advantage of a broken down vehicle to unleash terror on its occupants.
They were said to had ferociously emerged from their 'enclave' under the bridge, swam on the stranded passengers like bees, and held them hostage.
While they were busy ransacking the passengers, with the aim of dispossessing them of their valuables, providence took a swipe on the marauders with the sudden emergence of policemen from Warewa Police Division in Ogun State, a situation they could not withstand and resorted to fleeing the scene.
The operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Akinade Johnson, were on routine patrol, in line with the directives of the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, to ensure that miscreants did not hide under any guise to torment the populace, and by extension, hijack the expected yuletide fun from the citizenry.
According to Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, in a press release made available"On sighting the police, the hoodlums took to their heels but they were hotly chased by the policemen, the aftermath of which was the arrest of one of them, by name Lucky Emmanuel, while the remaining three escaped".
Oyeyemi stated that the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had directed that the suspect, from whom a locally fabricated double barrel pistol with two live revolver ammunition were recovered, be transferred to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squard (FSARS), Abeokuta, for discreet investigation, even as he ordered a massive manhunt for the fleeing members of the syndicate within the shortest possible time.
"The CP known as the Lion of Gateway also appealed to members of the public to make adequate use of the control room number whenever they are in any form of distress. The numbers are; 08081770416 and 08081770419", the statement added.
