Against the backdrop of un-articulate mission or reasons for being in a profession, which studies show is chiefly the cause of failures identified with some professionals in virtually all fields, it is instructive to state that Ahmed Iliyasu, a Commissioner of Police, knew what he wanted when he chose a career in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF)  in 1988, and clearly defined his mission as service to humanity with utmost humility and integrity, not leaving out upholding the rights of the people and rule of law.

Yesterday, Saturday 14th July was a remarkable day for the entire Igbein community in the rock city of Abeokuta Ogun state where the Oba of Igbein installed CP Ahmed Iliyasu psc+ as the Aare Meyegun of the entire Igbein land. Ever since then, this philosophy of his has continually guided his steps and made him a shining star amongst his peer and contemporaries, both in the police force and the civil society.

An erudite scholar and a witty administrator par excellence, Iliyasu, in the course of his calling, is noted for his uprightness and commitment to duty so much that everywhere he served, locally and internationally, he ensured his two feet were on the ground, which earned him many laurels.

Between 11995 and 1996, as a Chief Investigation Officer at the United Nations Verification Mission III headquarters in Luanda, Angola, Iliyasu investigated a serious case of international nature which led to the arrest of a syndicate that specialized in the stealing of UN vehicles and the subsequent recovery of some of the stolen vehicles as well as arms and ammunition. He was, upon that feat, appreciated with a letter of commendation by the UN police commissioner.

In the same vein, while serving as Area Commander, Sokoto Metro between 2007 and 2012, he injected a new blood into the operations of the command, which strengthened the workforce, by establishing and reviving the ever strong and vibrant Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC). This achievement was not left unnoticed, as he got a letter of commendation for that.

As a Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Fraud Section, Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Abuja between 2012 and 2014, he smashed many notorious armed robbery gangs and recovered various stolen properties, including vehicles, even as fraudsters were trailed and nabbed in Kaduna, Gombe, Sokoto and Utako in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Born on May 27, 1961, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, who hails from Tudun Wada in Kaduna, started  his elementary education in Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School, Faki Road, Tudun Wada between 1970 and 1976. He thereafter, proceeded to Rimi College, Kaduna in 1976 and passed out in 1981.

In 1981, he gained admission into the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and finished up in 1982 and thereafter, proceeded for his degree in Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto. He had his youth service between 1985 and 1986. Between 1988 and 1989, he was in the Nigeria Police Academy Annex, Kaduna for Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) course.

On completion of his Cadet ASP course, Iliyasu was posted to Kaduna State Police Command, where he served in various capacities as Administrative Officer (A/O) in Gabasawa Division;2i/c to the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), Kachia Division; Officer in charge of General Investigation, State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID)

He served as Chief Investigation Officer at Luanda headquarters of the United Nations Verification Mission in 1995-1996; Police College, Kaduna (PCK) as officer in charge of Basic Training Wing, 1996-2000.

He served in Gombe State Police Command as Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Gombe Central in 2000-2001; State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau as 2i/c, in 2001-2004; Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Kaltungo Division between 2004 and 2005; DPO, Utako ‘B’ Division, FCT (2005-2006); Nigeria Police Command, Kano as Professional Studies (2006-2007); Area Commander, Sokoto Metro (2007-2012); Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Anti-fraud Section, FCIID, Abuja (2012-2014; 2i/c, Ports n, Western Command, Lagos (2014-2016) and Police Staff College, Jos, as coordinator of courses.

He was also recognise by TMnews Magazine as THE LION OF GATEWAY and since then no criminal dare to go near his den.

There is no doubting the fact that Ogun State is lucky to have had Cp Ahmed Iliyasu as the state Commissioner of Police, even though his first one month in office was very turbulent, with unhealthy scheming to oust him.
